About Us
Why BGIT?
Tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world — and one of the least diverse. Approximately 78% of tennis players are white, while only 6.8% are Black. (Human Kinetics )And yet, the momentum is shifting — Black and African American participation grew by 26% in 2024 alone, adding over 662,000 new players to the court. (USTA ) Black Girls in Tennis was created to be part of that shift — not just as a statistic, but as a community. Because every woman deserves a place in this sport where she feels she truly belongs.
The Origin
Black Girls in Tennis was born from love — love of the game, and love of community. Jackie Ngondo, our founder, grew up with tennis and carried that passion into adulthood. But as she looked for her people on the court, she found a gap. Not a reason to walk away — a reason to build something.
In 2024, Jackie launched the Edmonton chapter, and it caught on quickly. Women showed up, connected, and kept coming back. Tennis was fun. Tennis was stylish. Tennis was theirs.
The Expansion
The energy was too big to stay in one city. Yosi was looking for a tennis club to join when she stumbled across BGIT Edmonton — and something clicked. She reached out to Jackie, and what started as a conversation turned into a full-blown Calgary launch in June 2025.
That same year, BGIT crossed provincial lines with the Winnipeg chapter at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. With plans to expand to even more Canadian cities in 2026, BGIT is well on its way to becoming a coast-to-coast movement.
What we stand for
We believe tennis is for everyone. We believe in community that lifts, wellness that is holistic, and spaces where no one ever has to feel like an outsider. Whether you have never held a racket or have been playing for years, BGIT is your home on the court.
The sisterhood is here. We saved you a spot.
